SUBARU has introduced a diesel engine in its Forester SUV and it's a great flat four that works really well. It's very smooth and quiet, punchy above 2,000 revs and decently economical, although the offical average is 44mpg and I got 37 on a long run.

TOYOTA has just unveiled a new Land Cruiser and they say it has improved off-road capability and is more refined on the road. In this country, only one engine will be available - a new version of the three-litre D4-D that drives through a five-speed automatic gearbox.

JEEP Cherokees are built to last and although there were some reliability problems with earliest models, there does not seem to be any failing now. They are very well equipped and good value for money secondhand - as long as they have the all-important full service history.

A FORMER director of social services has been charged with sexually assaulting teenage boys at a North children's centre. Dr Rod Ryall, 67, of Mirfield, West Yorkshire, will appear before magistrates next month accused of 13 offences, some dating back more than 40 years.
