SUBARU has introduced a diesel engine in its Forester SUV and it's a great flat four that works really well. It's very smooth and quiet, punchy above 2,000 revs and decently economical, although the offical average is 44mpg and I got 37 on a long run.

TOYOTA has just unveiled a new Land Cruiser and they say it has improved off-road capability and is more refined on the road. In this country, only one engine will be available - a new version of the three-litre D4-D that drives through a five-speed automatic gearbox.
