NEXT week marks the 40th anniversary of abortion being made legal in the UK. Nearly seven million procedures have since been performed, yet it remains controversial. Now MPs are deciding whether to reduce the 24-week limit at which abortions can be carried out, with supporters saying medical advances mean that foetuses which were once deemed unviable can now survive outside the womb and deserve to be given a chance at life. Those against reducing the time limit argue the number of abortions carried out so late in pregnancy is very small and only occur in unusual circumstances.
