UNDER pressure Prime Minister Gordon Brown is actively allowing the North-South divide to become ever wider, according to a leading economic expert from the region.

The Government has approved a proposal to invest billions of pounds of taxpayers' money into a rail scheme improving links across London while plans for a project costing the same amount and with the potential to benefit the whole country sit on the shelf.
