CUMBRIA: Up to 100 jobs will be lost at a paper mill. Iggesund Paperboard in Siddick, near Workington, blamed a major slump in orders. The firm currently employs around 400 staff, and is looking to lose some 25% of its workforce. The plant is owned by a Swedish parent company, Holmen, and produces some 70,000 tonnes of folding boxes each year. Staff were given the news in a meeting last Monday, and it is expected the plant will close one of its two production units at the end of this year.
NORTH YORKSHIRE: Six greyhounds were killed when a blaze swept through kennels in North Yorkshire on Thursday. The fire broke out at the Beechwood Lodge kennels near York. A spokeswoman from the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that it was started by an electrical fault in the boiler.
