OVER a century ago, porcelain-white skin was a sign of a well- bred lady. Women sometimes went as far as to use arsenic to lighten their skin without realising the damage they were doing to their health.

Nowadays women - and men - are posing as much of a risk to their health by spending time on sunbeds which the World Health Organisation - WHO - has now classified as dangerous as cigarettes or asbestos.
